It has gotten so that I am now dreaming about writing posts in my sleep. I dreamt all kinds of good stuff to talk about today, but I didn’t get up to write it all down, and now it is all gone forever. Keeping a dream journal is probably the way to go, but I just don’t want to wake up to do the deed. Today's song comes from a set that just washed over me at the Music Fog Marathon in March at Threadgill’s. It was the day so far this year, that reached a fever pitch. Malford and the band rocked the room in full-tilt boogie tradition.
Where to start with Malford? I guess the first time I heard him sing was “Good Time For The Blues," from Storyville, and that is when I first fell in love with him. Then one night a year ago, he did a set at the Saxon Pub, where he was channeling the spirit of Stephen Bruton, and that touched me even more. Malford himself is a force of nature. That voice, that presence. It is astounding watching him work it. And I love that soul is making such a strong comeback. We think this song, “River,” is as yet unreleased; it’s Malford with Yoggie Musgrove (Bass), Phil Redmond (Keys), Tiny Watkins (Drums), and Jeff Plankenhorn (Guitar). Hell yeah, this will wake up your Monday!
