What is it they say, that moving is one of the most stressful activities on the earth. And I am still knee deep in the experience of my trek back to New York. Last night, my truck came and as the men were doing the heavy lifting, one thing and one thing only fell out of a box. It was the receipt for the wedding ceremony to my late husband Robert in Los Angeles in 1987. He just might have been welcoming me home!
Everybody could use a little mercy now…the immortal words of Mary Gauthier here, from a session we did with Mike Farris at the Spring Music Fog Marathon at Threadgill’s in March, oh yeah, with John Fullbright sitting in. Can you say lightning in a bottle? Here is “Mercy Now.”
Today is the last day to donate to our Kickstarter campaign for us to be able to do the Fall Music Fog Marathon in Nashville during the Americana Fest, September 12th - 15th. We wouldn’t have undertaken another campaign if we hadn’t been successful earlier this year. Funny, last time we were on deadline, which was back in March for the Spring Music Fog Marathon during SXSW, we had $4,000 to raise the last afternoon. It became something of my own personal telethon, as I did outreach via email, Facebook, and phone to friends and industry folks, keeping them updated as the goal got closer. We hit it with two hours to spare before the deadline. I do not expect to be doing that this afternoon, however, as we are still so far away. I am sorry that it is not likely to happen, and that Music Fog will not then be able to attend the Americana Conference to film another forty artists. The good news is, though, if you pledged and we don’t make our goal, the money simply reverts back to you. We can’t keep it, wouldn’t want to, either, because we needed the whole sum, $15,000 to be able to travel to Nashville for a week for a crew of five, and have a production budget. Maybe someone will wave a magic wand and make it happen. Ya never know!
One of the most watched artists we have filmed is James McMurtry. He is always in Music Fogs top ten watched videos. We are honored to be given access to capture him, and it happened again during our Spring Marathon at Threadgill’s. I love the way he occupies the narrative, he wears the words he sings, you can see it in his eyes. James is on a western swing of dates. Today we bring you a total classic, “Red Dress,” originally found on the 2002 Saint Mary Of The Woods CD, which I recommend highly. There is also a version of it on Live in Aught-Three. The latter album was re-mastered and reissued since its original 2004 release. We have a solo version from back in March for you today. ”Red Dress.”
The Big Sky Songwriter’s Festival is underway this week at Big Sky Resort, and I am sure it has been a great and very productive time. It wraps this evening with a performance at Whiskey Jack’s starting at 5pm featuring Dustin Welch, Walt Wilkins, Kevin Welch, and Jon Pousette-Dart. The good news is there are tickets available if you happen to be in the neighborhood. As this is the inaugural year for the Songwriter’s Festival, put it on your calendar for next year, same time, same place.
Bearfoot is our band today, with a video called “Midnight In Montana.” They are on their way to the Americana Festival in Nashville next month. Now of course, if Music Fog was in attendance, you KNOW we would be asking them to appear in front of our cameras. We don’t charge the artists for our Music Fog Marathon’s, and we don’t charge you to watch our videos either. We are here to aid in music discovery. Which is the reason why we are doing another Kickstarter campaign to raise the necessary funds to get ourselves to Nashville to set up. We would love your help, both by pledging, and by sharing the link with your roots music loving friends. We sure would appreciate the opportunity to film another huge gaggle of artists. Time is running out, though, as the deadline for hitting our goal is Friday night.
Back to Bearfoot, the post-bluegrass outfit headquartered in Nashville. This song is from their American Story album which came out last year. They play Fairbanks, Alaska tonight, and are back in the South in September. Here comes “Midnight in Montana,” watch out, this is a fun video!
