The Trishas "Chicken & Dumplings"

Today we take a gander at the long tradition of food as a metaphor for sex in blues music, as I found a wonderful history of The Blues here. This music is rife with euphemisms and secret code. I am reminded of the songs that gave instructions for the underground railroad which guided the escape to freedom, like this one from Mark Erelli “The Drinking Gourd.”

The melding of Black folk music with White was a wholly American construct. Back then, there were things that couldn’t be said in polite company. Boy does that ever seem quaint now that there is no governor on how overt music can be. Once upon a time, you had to read between the lines.

To wit, cruising through Alabama a couple of weeks ago, I heard an amazing song that I just had to share with you, “Sorry, I Didn’t Know It Was Your Mama,” from Lenny Williams. That is just way too much information!

That said, today’s song here on the Fog, “Chicken and Dumplings,” is relatively innocent. We filmed The Trishas, with the powerful blues belting of Liz Foster, at Threadgill’s WHQ this past March during the Music Fog Marathon. Not too long ago, when a chill was in the air, I fondly remember a dinner with this ultimate comfort food, as Chicken and Dumplings is a weekly special there. The Trishas will be playing Threadgill’s WHQ this Friday night, and then continue a run of Texas dates before heading to The Rockies. All I can say is, “Is it time for lunch yet?”

Deadman "If I Lay Down In The River"

Life is pretty strange. When I was out west earlier this year with John Bohlinger, one of the folks that was sharing the stage with him was Claudia Williams from the legendary western outfit Montana Rose. Tuesday night I went to see her daughter Tessy Lou Williams with her band at the Saxon Pub for Happy Hour. She sings, how do we say, like clear mountain water, and it has an old school feel, but it is modern at the same time. Mighty sweet stuff. Ran into a couple of the guys from Deadman in the back room, and they were regaling me with tales of listening to the new stuff they are working on for the forthcoming album. Austin, It’s a contact sport.

We taped Deadman at Threadgill’s in March during the Music Fog Marathon. There were very happy that we didn’t squawk when all six of them piled into our tiny stage. They are Steven Collins on lead vocals and guitar, Kevin McCollough on guitar and backing vocals, Jacob Hildebrand on lead guitar, Matthew Mollica on keyboards and accordion, Kyle Schneider on drums, Lonnie Trevino Jr. on bass. There is quite the buzz here in Austin on them; their shows are celestial events. To wit, we offer this song, "If I Lay Down In The River."

Maxim Ludwig & The Santa Fe Seven "Nothing At All"

Whew, Bonnaroo. It was great being back after these few years away, not that it isn't an endurance test. Notable this year was the amount of roots music infiltrating the line up. So cool to see so many of our Americana brethren getting time in the sunlight. Hayes Carll, Justin Townes Earle, Abigail Washburn, Band of Heathens, Ben Sollee, Bela Fleck, Wanda Jackson, Del McCoury, way more, and then there was the highlight for me, the reunion of Buffalo Springfield. Nirvana.... obviously not the band, the state of enlightenment. Getting to see bands that you have read about all in one place is a total treat. Live music is so cool, especially when it is at this level of artistry, and everyone BRINGS it, because, after all, it is Bonnaroo.

Who knows, maybe one day, Music Fog will get to set up on a bus at Bonnaroo! Fingers crossed for the future. We still haven't even brought you every artist we taped during our 44 band Music Fog Marathon at Threadgill's WHQ in March.  Maxim Ludwig & The Santa Fe Seven, for instance. They are playing a date in a month at the ubercool Levitt Pavillion in Pasadena, California. The band is based in L.A. Maxim is infused with the ghosts of folk music past, but brings it into today with fresh passion. Here he is with 'Seven' members Ben Reddell, Jorge Balbi, and Chris Vos, with "Nothing At All."
